Bill Lilly, long-time resident of Central Ohio, was considered by many of his colleagues to be the world’s greatest Penman (sometimes referred to as calligraphy).  As a young man, Lilly achieved greatness as a Master Penman, graduating with a gold seal from Zanerian College, which was in Columbus, Ohio.  After turning down an employment offer from The White House, he turned his back on the art form and worked for International Harvester for 20 years.  Decades later, he was rediscovered while driving a passenger bus between Upper Arlington and OSU, and was championed to world-wide Icon status.

“In the spring of 2017 I listened to a Joy Venture podcast about Bill Lilly. I was captivated by the story and, after meeting Bill I was convinced, his story would make a compelling documentary.” Tim Courlas, filmmaker. Courlas explained that much of the film is Bill Lilly telling his unique and compelling story.

Courlas, who has extensive background as a Director of Photography, directed, shot and edited the documentary. The music was written by film composer Ken McCaw, also from Central Ohio.

Over the past four years Courlas recorded interviews with Lilly, his family, coworkers and several top artists in the Penmanship world, from Albuquerque, Augusta, Birmingham, Boston, Columbus, Louisville and Washington DC.

“Bill’s interests were so diverse it was difficult at first to find a single thread to build on but, as is always the case, the story emerged in the edit. You don’t need to be interested in penmanship to be inspired by Bill’s story. Ultimately his is a universal and highly-entertaining story.” Tim Courlas

About Tim:
Tim Courlas is a Producer/Director/DP, Documentary Filmmaker and Photographer.  He has made his living behind the camera since graduating from The Ohio Institute of Photography in 1980. After freelancing early on and then working for two production companies, Tim started his own video and photography business in January 2014.

Tim believes "Generalist" is not a dirty word. He photographs everything, products, portraits, architecture, reportage. His video work for health care, politics, education, manufacturing, financial and many others is equally varied. His clients can be assured that there just isn't much Tim hasn't run into before.
